Temporary Events notices
This is a useful device to use if you are not going to hold many functions that may involve licensable activities:
- Provision of regulated entertainment
- Provision of Late Night Refreshment
- Sale/supply of alcohol
The conditions for a TEN are as follows:
- No one set of premises can have more than 12 TEN's in any given year, starting on 1st January
- A personal licence holder can apply for 50 TEN's
- A private individual can apply for 5 TEN's
- A TEN cannot be applied for if you will attract more than 499 persons
- At least 10 working days notice must be given to the Local Authority (with the fee) and the police before the event (remember Bank Holiday Mondays are not a working day)
- The police have 48 hours to object
The key issue may revolve around the fee payable for an annual licence. A temporary events notice can be granted for 12 events in respect of a set of premises in any given year. This will cover provision of music - but if there are more occasions when entertainment will be supplied then application will have to be made for a full licence.
TIP - Check your licence, are you covered for special days - St Patrick's Day, New Year? Do you need to provide entertainment on a specific occasion? Do you wish to sell alcohol/provide Late Night Refreshment on limited occasions? Do you wish to run licensable activities outside the area covered by your licence?
